Welcome to week 1 of Puppy SKills
Thank you for choosing Goin’ Muttz for your training journey with your puppy. We hope you had a great first Puppy Skills Class. Goin’ Muttz mission is to help empower and educate puppies and their owners on how to effectively communicate, setting the foundations for success and life-long friendships.
The way Goin’ Muttz looks at puppies and their behaviour is different. First of all, dog training must always be fun - remove any stress, remove any pressure, remove any rigidness - stay in the moment as that is the only way your puppy knows how to live. If you aren’t having a good time, how is your puppy meant to? Secondly, the behavioural problem/s you are having are often made up of so many different pieces that it takes a holistic approach to achieve the best outcome for everyone. Dog behaviour is not all one-sided and about the dog doing what we want, it's about working harmoniously together as a team. As their guardian you need to take the time to understand your puppy, their language and needs, so they can communicate with you and are heard and listened to. Before we even start to look into why a puppy is doing what it is doing, we must look in the mirror and change our own behaviours. Our relationship with our puppy is built on the foundation of achieving willing cooperation. It’s not about getting the puppy to do what we want it to do when we tell it to do it, it’s about encouraging the puppy to make its own right decision because it wants to. “We want our dog to walk beside us not because they have to but because they want to” - Tamika Lucock.
Being centred and in touch with your own inner emotions and well-being gives you the ability to influence your puppy at a deeper and more profound level than simply teaching a puppy ‘tricks’. It’s about teaching your puppy life skills. Establishing important concepts like trust, respect, self-control, self-responsibility, problem-solving and the understanding of boundaries and rules are vital if you want your dog to develop into a balanced, likeable member of the family and society. If we get these concepts right, usually the behaviour issues that were happening in the first place have no need to take place.
Goin’ Muttz trainers are fully qualified with many years of study, continuing education and experience behind them. Goin’ Muttz only uses scientifically modern based positive reinforcement methods to train your puppy. We DO NOT use punishment-based methods nor do we endorse them. We want your puppy to trust you not fear you.
